The B-24 H ‘Liberator’ airplane #42-95379 nicknamed “Extra Joker”, piloted by 1st Lt. Kenneth A. Whiting was flying in number two position when it was hit by a FW-190 (Focke-Wulf Fw 190 airplane) in the attack over the IP. The Main tanks burst into flame, after which the ship went into a spin to left. After dropping approx. 5000 ft, the ship exploded at abt. 11:16 near Turnitz, Austria. There were ten men on that aircraft. Sgt. Elmer J. Anderson was listed as the nose gunner.
