Captain Clance was a member of the 1st Raider Company attached to the X Corps, U.S. Army. The unit was organized to create a diversion at an island near Kunsan, South Korea in support of the Inchon landing. Captain Clance was severely wounded during the night operation on September 13, 1950 and had to be left behind when the unit withdrew. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Captain Clance was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
